Introduction
The Enhanced Provision for Social Emotional and Mental Health children at Hargate Primary School is a specialist resource, which provides support for SEMH children in the Sandwell Borough. We provide support for children who have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) for SEMH and who demonstrate significant SEMH traumas often having been excluded from previous settings. The principle of the FP is to primarily support the pupil in being able to co/self-regulate himself or herself, this is based around nurtured relationships and school consistency. We support pupils across the whole of the Primary Phase Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 and are the only school in Sandwell to offer this level of need.
Pupils who attend the Provision are members of the mainstream school and participate fully in school life, including school assemblies, productions, and educational visits. Pupils are supported by the SEMH lead, SENCO, and/or Specialist Learning Support Assistants to be included in mainstream lessons where possible. Occasionally their learning needs are met outside the classroom and the provision provides a quiet room and specialist resources to support this, through 1:1 teaching or small group work.
SEMH Provision Lead
The SEMH Lead has the responsibility of monitoring the curriculum entitlement of the SEMH pupil and the preparation, implementation, monitoring and assessment of individual learning programmes to include the Hargate SEMH Pupil Profile.
Class teachers
Class teachers have the responsibility of planning, delivering, monitoring and assessing the achievement of SEMH pupils in their class. They work alongside the provision lead in order to differentiate the curriculum and develop specialist resources.
Specialist Learning Support Assistants
Specialist Learning Support Assistants support the work of teachers to fully include the pupils in their mainstream classes, and also help plan and deliver specific SEMH targets.
Home-School Liaison
We aim to foster a positive relationship between home and school. We aim to be approachable and open. We keep in contact in a variety of ways. Termly we are able to offer parent/ teacher meetings and yearly, annual reviews for those pupils that have an Educational Health Care Plan.
Transport
Sandwell LA may provide transport to and from Hargate Primary School. Each pupil's needs will be assessed by the LA. Each taxi or minibus carries a Passenger Assistant. It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to ensure that children are ready to leave at the arranged time and that they are available to receive the pupil on the return journey. (see Sandwell Local Offer).
How do I get a place?
Parents/carers request a place via Sandwell Special Educational Needs, decisions on placement within the provision lie with the LA. Pupils attending the provision will have an Educational Health Care Plan that recognises their SEMH needs. The plan sets out the specific needs of the child and how these should be met within the school placement, it is reviewed annually.
Transitions and Provision Meetings
Transitions to the provision will be agreed with the school parent/carer and will typically be phased starts, supported time in the classroom or working predominantly within the Gateway.
The provision is guided by structured Provision Meetings, involving senior leaders and class teachers. These take place within the first two weeks of a child starting, then at least half-termly or sooner if concerns arise. Meetings agree and review “All About Me” targets, support plans, and strategies for dysregulation. Changes to a child’s placement or level of support can only be agreed through these meetings.
Before admission, there is close liaison with the local authority, the child’s previous setting, and parents, including visits, meetings, and decisions about phased starts and initial placement. Children are initially placed on one of three SEMH Provision Steps:
The Learning Gateway provides continuous support for regulation, nurture, and additional academic intervention. Children are supported to return to their agreed step as soon as possible. Absences or external factors that cause dysregulation may result in short-term increased Gateway support, agreed through a Provision Meeting and in partnership with parents.
